AJAY CHAUHAN

Captain Ajay Chauhan is an aviator, former Indian Air Force officer and aviation executive with more than three decades of experience spanning military flying, presidential service, government aviation, flight operations and aviation infrastructure development.

His aviation journey began in 1988, followed by his civil glider pilot qualification in 1989. He subsequently joined the Indian Air Force and underwent military flying training, building professional flying experience across military aircraft, helicopters and airplanes.

His flying career represents an uncommon breadth of aviation experience spanning gliders, military aviation, helicopters and airplanes, supported by commercial pilot qualifications in both India and the United States.

Over the course of his career, he has accumulated approximately 3,300 flying hours across 13+ aircraft types, combining operational flying experience with senior aviation administration and leadership.

From Early Theatre & Gliding to Military Aviation, Commercial Flying, Aviation Management & Infrastructure Development

Capt. Ajay Chauhan’s professional development began with diverse interests in theatre, science and aviation. In 1987-88, he participated in theatre camps and stage performances across Rajasthan, followed by the beginning of his aviation journey as a teenager in 1988 and his civil glider pilot qualification in 1989.

His subsequent professional development progressed through Indian Air Force fixed-wing and helicopter flying, military aviation, commercial pilot licensing, advanced international flight training, command and management education, aviation management and airport infrastructure development.

Over the course of his career, he has undertaken academic, military, technical and professional training in India, France, Japan and the United States, supplemented by recurrent pilot, simulator, safety and regulatory training required throughout a professional aviation career.

1987–1988 | THEATRE & PERFORMING ARTS — NATIONAL SCHOOL OF DRAMA

Participated in two theatre camps associated with the National School of Drama, gaining early exposure to theatre, stage performance and the performing arts.

As part of these programmes, he participated in theatrical performances presented across various cities in Rajasthan.

Although his professional career subsequently developed in aviation and public service, this early involvement with theatre represented the beginning of an interest in the performing arts that he would reconnect with decades later through his association with Legend Studios USA in California.

1989 | CIVIL GLIDER PILOT QUALIFICATION — INDIA

Ajay Chauhan began his aviation journey in 1988 at the age of 16 and earned his Civil Glider Pilot Qualification in 1989 at the age of 17.

Gliding provided his earliest practical foundation in aerodynamics, aircraft handling, situational awareness and pilot decision-making, beginning an aviation journey that would subsequently extend across military and civil flying.

1991 | BACHELOR OF SCIENCE — ST. XAVIER’S COLLEGE

Completed his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), graduating First Class in Science, with academic studies encompassing Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Zoology.

His education in the sciences provided an academic and analytical foundation before his progression into professional military aviation.

1992 | INDIAN AIR FORCE FLYING TRAINING

Fighter Training Wing (FTW) | Hyderabad | Indian Air Force

Underwent professional military fixed-wing flying training at the Fighter Training Wing (FTW), Hyderabad, as part of his progression as an Indian Air Force aviator.

Progressed from fixed-wing military flying into professional helicopter flying training at the Indian Air Force Helicopter Training School.

Indian Air Force

Completed operational conversion training on the Mi-8 and Mi-17 military helicopters, progressing into the heavy-lift and gunship helicopter environment of the Indian Air Force.

The conversion further developed his professional military flying experience in medium/heavy-lift rotary-wing operations, including the operational disciplines associated with military transport and armed helicopter roles.

This progression—from fixed-wing military flying to helicopter training and subsequently Mi-8/Mi-17 operational conversion—formed an important foundation of his professional aviation career.

The programme further developed his professional capabilities in advanced helicopter operations, instrument flying procedures and single-pilot flight operations.

Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM Ahmedabad)

From Military Aviation to Rashtrapati Bhavan

Ajay Chauhan served as an officer of the Indian Air Force from 1993 to 2002, with responsibilities spanning military flying, operations, administration and leadership.

A defining chapter of his service was his appointment as Aide-de-Camp to two Presidents of India — President K. R. Narayanan and President Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.

His service at Rashtrapati Bhavan included responsibilities associated with the country's highest constitutional office, national ceremonies and high-level official and international engagements.

From Creating the Directorate to Founding GUJSAIL

In 2004, Ajay Chauhan was appointed the first Director of Aviation for the State of Gujarat and established the Directorate of Aviation, creating an institutional framework for the State's aviation administration and operations.

His responsibilities encompassed government flight operations, aviation administration and safety, regulatory coordination, airport and airfield development, regional connectivity and aviation infrastructure.

As part of establishing the new aviation identity of the State, he personally designed the official logo of the Directorate of Aviation.

2010 — FOUNDING OF GUJSAIL

In 2010, Ajay Chauhan founded Gujarat State Aviation Infrastructure Company Limited (GUJSAIL) and served as its first Board Member, Director and Chief Executive Officer.

From its inception, he played a central role in establishing GUJSAIL and developing its mandate for aviation infrastructure, airport development and improved air connectivity across Gujarat. He also personally designed the GUJSAIL logo, creating the visual identity of the organization he helped establish.

His work during this period included major aviation and infrastructure initiatives associated with Rajkot International Airport, Dholera International Airport, Ankleshwar, regional air connectivity, heliport development, aviation policy and aviation infrastructure across Gujarat.
